Ideas for general learning activities

Emphasis for learning of Early Stage 1: Living and non-living things.

Importance of language:

Development of appropriate language is a critical aspect of all the learning activities.

For example male and female (rather than boy/girl or husband/wife), microorganisms etc

Living and non-living things

  • Identify and classify things into living and non-living groups.
  • Discuss: ‘What makes something a living thing?’
  • How living things can be grouped into plants and animals
  • Discuss: ‘How do plants differ from animals?’ (Ref. Google search on ‘Characteristics of Plants and Animals’)

Living things

Plants:

mosses, ferns, woody and non-woody flowering plants

Animals:

worms, insects, fish, frogs, reptiles, birds, and mammals

Discover how plants grow and reproduce.

Animals

Discuss: ‘We are living things. Which group do we belong to?’

Exploring animal habitats

  • Identify the materials that were used in the construction of your home and/or school.
  • Name any special features that help to keep your house or school cool and warm.
