ErinEarth
ErinEarth is a site that has been developed to by the Presentation Sisters to demonstrate sustainable living as a community and school resource. The underlying philosophy behind the development of ErinEarth is based on "justice" and "right relationship".
ErinEarth focuses on:
ErinEarth is a living growing garden, changing with the seasons and the years.
The "Erin" part of the name refers to the fact that ErinEarth is on the land of the old Mt Erin Convent where the Sisters who taught in the school next door used to live. (For more on the history, click here) The first five nuns came from Ireland to start the school in 1874 (Presentation Sisters history). Erin means Ireland.
The "Earth" part of the name refers to this special piece of land. This land is Wiradjuri land where the Wiradjuri have lived for many thousands of years. For the Wiradjuri, the Earth is their mother and gives them everything they need.
The Wiradjuri treat their land with respect. We respect this land, ErinEarth, in a similar way.
Inspired by ErinEarth and want to create or develop your own garden. Click here for an introduction to garden design.
See how ErinEarth grew.
The "virtual" tour gives you an idea of what you will see when you come to ErinEarth.
We are open on the third Saturday of the month from March to November. Each Open Day features a special workshop. See What's On for coming events.
If you can't find something, or want more information on any, please contact us.
The basis of ErinEarth is our wide range of native plants. You can see how they grow in Wagga Wagga and get ideas for garden design.
We also have a vegetable garden providing fresh vegies for the house.
The garden provides food and shelter for a wide range of animals including our garden guardians, our dogs, Megs and Lizzie.
Birds are easy to spot flying around and perching on branches, feeding on flowers and seeds.
Look harder and you might be rewarded with glimpses of lizards.
At times, tadpoles are abundant in our pond.
Insects and spiders abound, some "goodies" and some "baddies".
These sawfly larvae have climbed down from one gum tree and are on their way to another. They can strip all the leaves from smaller trees in a few days.
We have at least two tortoises in our dam. "Tom" was released in October 2010.
Together, our plants and animals provide biodiversity.
ErinEarth is not just for plants and animals. People live here too. There is an energy efficient house, vegetable garden, small orchard and chooks.
